Travel Documents for Your Rwanda Trip

Planning a journey to the “Land of a Thousand Hills” is an exciting milestone, whether you are gearing up for mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park or exploring Kigali’s clean, vibrant streets. To ensure a seamless arrival at Kigali International Airport or any land border, having your paperwork organized is essential.

Valid Passport
Your passport is your primary entry document and must meet standard international rules:

  • Validity: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date into Rwanda.
  • Blank Pages: Requires at least 2 consecutive blank pages for immigration entry and exit stamps.
Entry Visas
Rwanda has one of the most traveler-friendly visa policies in Africa:

  • 30-Day Visa on Arrival: Citizens of all countries receive a 30-day tourist visa upon arrival at all entry points for $50 USD (payable in cash or by major credit card).
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: If your travel plans combine Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on a single trip, apply for this 90-day multi-entry visa ($100 USD). Note: You must apply through the country you will enter first.
  • Exemptions: Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth, and Francophonie member states receive free 30-day visas on arrival.
Health & Vaccination Records
Keeping your medical credentials organized helps avoid unexpected delays:

  • Yellow Fever Certificate: Mandatory if you are arriving from or transiting through (for more than 12 hours) a yellow fever-endemic country, including neighboring destinations like Uganda or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Routine Travel Insurance: While not mandatory at immigration, comprehensive travel insurance covering emergency medical evacuation is strongly recommended for high-altitude trekking.
Logistics & Activity Permits
Keep physical and offline digital copies of your key travel confirmations ready:

  • National Park Permits: Official confirmation receipts for gorilla, golden monkey, or chimpanzee tracking issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or your safari company.
  • Proof of Onward Travel: A confirmed return airline ticket indicating your departure before your visa expires.
  • Accommodation Vouchers: Printed details of your hotel booking for your first night.
Storing digital scans on your phone alongside printed hard copies guarantees a swift, hassle-free entry so you can start enjoying your Rwandan adventure right away.
